MoMA, exterior
The new MoMA opened up a number of years ago. I remember the excitement building as they prepared to reveal the new design. I went on a weekend near the holidays. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed by the interior. It felt cramped and boxy. The celebrated main atrium dwarfed the artwork, and the path to reach it seemed convoluted. There was no sense of grandeur upon entering the museum.
However, on the sixth floor, some large, open gallery space exhibited what I had hoped for. I had been a few times to the Dia:Beacon, and loved the way in which the space engaged with the art, showing it off in the best possible light. There was room to breathe.
I can't remember what the old MoMA looked or felt like now that I think of it. I wish it were possible to do a side-by-side comparison. Or I wish I had a much better memory.
