The Irish Hunger Memorial
It was a hot night. I had hoped to escape the heat and humidity, and walked south to Battery Park City in search of a movie theater. When I arrived, I learned that the air conditioning was not working properly. A woman didn't care. She was struggling with the automated ticketing machine.
I walked into the adjacent hotel and sat in the lobby. I read the New Yorker and watched the sky change colors as the sun set.
Leaving the hotel, I walked towards the river, past Brian Tolle's Irish Hunger Memorial. I watched as people milled about, breaking the bands of light that wrapped around its base. Some walked into the memorial to meander along the paths planted with native Irish flora often found in fallow fields.
The night had become cooler. A breeze blew off the Hudson. I walked home.
