69 Chinese restaurant
I've never eaten here. I prefer to eat a little to the west of this place, at a noodle shop called Bo Ky. A friend introduced me to them last year and I've eaten more bowls of fish cake noodle soup than I can remember. I had just eaten there before taking this picture. We were probably on our way to the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory.
One of my favorite ice creams can be found at the Factoryrice. Unfortunately, they seem to have stopped making it. Every time I'm in Chinatown now, I go to ask in the hopes that they'll have it, or at least realize there's a demand for it. Once, a woman behind the counter told me that ever since they stopped making it people have asked for it.
A few years ago, an unauthorized version of the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory opened in Nolita. The proprietor was apparently related to the owner of the original. Everything about the new store was remarkably similar to the original, and newspaper stories wrote about the battles between them (I only knew about that because they had actually taped one of the stories to the wall). They didn't last long, though I'm uncertain whether it was the location or the fighting that drove them out. Their black sesame ice cream was superior to the original.
Lately, my favorite ice cream is coming from a place on 10th Street called Sundaes and Cones. They have great wasabi, green tea, and black sesame flavors; something about them makes me wonder. And while I'm shouting out ice cream places, I also love Cones on Bleecker for their mate flavored ice cream. If it weren't so dreary today I'd think about taking a trip.
