After the performance, Lincoln Center
We took our time leaving the State Theater. We waited as the seats emptied around us. We lingered on the balconies.
Reaching the first floor, we decided to step out onto the terrace. We watched as people left the building, crossed the plaza, disappeared into cabs or into other crowds. A few people had joined us, but soon a guard called out to us. The theater was closing; we would have to leave. We tried various doors, but found that chains had been threaded through the handles. Padlocks kept them from loosening.
We walked back towards the end of the terrace and back into the main lobby. We took one last look around and then descended. Soon we were among the last few in the plaza; then we were walking home.
