Tango in Central Park
On summer Saturday evenings, tango dancers collect around a statue of Shakespeare in Central Park. Speakers are set up, and soon the sounds of decades-old recordings filter through the air. On lucky nights, a bandoleon player appears with a guitarist in tow. A woman sells empanadas from a park bench. Dancers are propositioned, and couples form for a tanda then disperse.
Last week, the New York Times ran an article about the dancers in Central Park. I had noticed the photographer taking pictures the week before, but didn't stay long enough to watch the reporter conduct interviews. The day the story ran, attendance soared. Large groups collected around the little plaza. There were almost too many to fit in the space allotted for the free lesson.
This is my attempt to capture the evening. I had recognized people from the New York Times photos; surprisingly, I recognize no one in this.
