Ghostly figures emerge from the steam
Walking home one night on Sixth avenue, I watched clouds of steam emerge from a pipe in the ground. It's generally not an uncommon sight, but the amount of steam was. I stood on the sidewalk waiting for people to walk through it. After a while, two people did, and I took this shot.
It may not be unique to New York, but one of the images I keep in mind (in addition to water towers, but more on that later) are these orange and white plastic pillars placed above vents to release steam into the air. It's seemingly innocuous, but then there have been instances of man hole covers exploding into the air. I don't know if the events are related. It happened on Houston Street not so long ago. These days Houston Street is a mess of construction and dust. I'm not sure what they're building or renovating (or if it's related to the exploding manhole covers). I hope when it's done they've preserved and expanded upon the green medians with miniparks of trees and grass.
Incidentally, I thought I saw an article somewhere recently on the smallest park in New York City, but I can't seem to locate that information at the moment.
