Picnicking on the lawn in Central Park
A few weeks ago I finally watched Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-up. I had long wanted to see it, after reading Cortazar's short story and seeing Antonioni's L'Avventura. When I heard of Antonioni's passing, I rented it immediately. Alan remarked upon my more challenging viewing habits.
Years ago, I decided that there were a number of world films and classics that I had not seen. That winter, I decided to start educating myself, and soon myself watching two or three films a night. The films were mostly in black and white, usually in series of different languages. Kim's video was up the street then, and on the way home I would stop by and choose something to watch that evening. I was using Roger Ebert's great films series as a guide, various top 100 lists, and recommendations by my then roommate Ed.
I took to heart Peter Bogdanovich's comment about there being no new movies or old movies, just those you've seen and those you haven't.
I took this photo with Blow-up in mind. It reminds me of David Hemmings' character, taking photos of a couple in the park, and what he discovers once he starts looking further into his prints.
