The view from Astoria Boulevard

The N train runs above ground once it arrives in Queens. I appreciate the elevated trains and the view they offer of the city. Running underground, the subway gives one no sense of one's surroundings. The city appears in glimpses, as one emerges like a gopher from its hole. The elevated trains offer visual map of the city, its grids and its changing neighborhoods.

This photo was taken from the Astoria Boulevard stop, looking out towards the bridge to New Jersey. I was waiting for a friend, and waited as trains rattled by to and fro, towards Manhattan and towards the last stop in Astoria. It was late, getting later. I think we were on our way to dinner near Jackson Heights, about to trade one elevated train and neighborhood for another; trading some of the most authentic Greek restaurants in the city for Thai.

That's a wonderful shot. It's a real picture of New York, which seems harder to find than it should be.

jodi » it's funny. my former roommate who has recently moved to asia felt that this was an evocative shot of new york as well and asked me to make a print for him to hang in his apartment as a reminder of his time here.
