Frog Hoppers, Astroland, NYC

Arriving at Coney Island, we walked through Astroland to get to the beach. We stopped to watch as people lurched around the Top Spin, their faces splashed just as the ride was coming to an end. One woman stood in line and then removed herself after thinking better of it.

Barkers called to us to play games. Park-goers walked around with stuffed animals of all sizes, the spoils of their participation. We walked on.

Near the beach, the rides gave way to children's rides, and we stopped to watch some of the smaller rides. We watched as these two children rose to the top of Frog Hoppers and then were dropped in stages. The girl seemed to be enjoying herself; her brother did not. He squirmed and she tried to calm him down. The ride operator warned him to sit still. His sister tried, but he was nervous. The operator slowed the ride, then stopped it. She went to look for help.

We thought the ride was stuck. The boy's father walked over to assure him he was ok. He could reach up and touch his leg. Soon the operator was back with a supervisor. The ride wasn't stuck, she just needed help stopping the ride and bringing the children down. Soon they were back on earth and the father led his family away.
