Sweet treats, NYC

I haven't been to the feast of San Gennaro in a few years. The last time I made it a destination I was with my cousin Shan. I cant really remember what we did. We must have had fried foods, played games.

Near my house is another, smaller feast, which brings out a subsection of the food and game stalls that line Mulberry during San Gennaro. One year I remember wanting a goldfish. Walking by, I decided to play a game for them. I tried to toss a ping pong ball into a small goldfish bowl. I paid my dollar. And then another. Then another. I gave up and walked to Chinatown where I bought a couple for less money than I had spent trying to win one.

It was two weeks before I was to set out for an extended trip. I asked my roommate not to kill them while I was away, but refrained from giving them names until I could be sure they would live. I watched them over that week. Suddenly they became ill. One died and then the other. I watched them disappear down the toilet. I retired the bowl.

This photo is of a lone stall erected early during the lead-up to San Gennaro. I didn't get any closer than this, so I can't say what the sweet treats were.
