Ice salesman, Tsukiji fish market, Tokyo
I visited the fish market twice. The first time it was closed. I stood outside the fence looking at the cavernous spaces, devoid of life. A few other tourists came and went, checking the dates and times. The guard fielded the same questions from the different groups. I thumbed through my guidebook, glad that I hadn't risen too early, and went to find breakfast elsewhere.
It was near the end of my trip, and I realized that I would have to visit the fish market on my last day in the city before heading back to New York. On my last night in Tokyo, I packed and set out the clothes that I would need. I set my alarm to get up early.
The market was bustling that next morning. Not wanting to rise at dawn, I had missed the busiest time of the morning. Some of the activity is closed to the public, including the tuna auctions. I wandered the stalls, stepping carefully around the streams of cast off water carrying fish entrails into the drains. Forklifts ran back and forth along the wider (and not so wide) corridors, and fishermen and salespeople ran along the narrower lanes. I tried to keep out of people's way.
I took this photo towards the end of my visit. I watched as blocks of ice were unloaded and shaved into cubes for people looking to keep their fish fresh. I took this photo as he paused to go over his books.
For breakfast I found a small shop that sold raw tuna over rice. I found a spot at the cramped counter and reveled in the meal. Outside, lines formed in front of various spots. Next time I'll do more research and see how much better I can eat.

love the contrast here, greatshot!
I like this shot. I was in Tokyo last February and went to Tsukiji on my second night. Tsukiji was a blast, topped off by the absolute best sushi meal I have ever had, and for less than I'd pay for crap sushi here in Minneapolis. Glorious (delish!) and infuriating (I want more!).
I got some good shots, but really wish I would've had my 30mm f/1.4 for that morning.
hi john. i know what you mean. i've been thinking of getting a 1.4 for a while, but the lenses are *so* expensive. someday, maybe...
