Midtown Manhattan, NYC
My friend Jane has left New York and returned to South Korea. I had known she was leaving but it was still surprising to learn she'd be leaving so soon. A week before she left, we made plans to meet for lunch with another friend and former co-worker, Karen. Of the three of us, only Karen was gainfully employed at the time and we decided to meet in midtown, near her office. Jane suggested we have Thai, as she hadn't had it in a while. I suggested one of the many Yum Yum's lining 8th Avenue in the 50s.
We met at 42nd street, near the subway station, just under the new New York Times building. I arrived first and whiled away the time taking photos. Karen arrived shortly thereafter, and we decided to kill time at Muji. I debated whether to buy a shirt after I discovered it was a women's shirt. I looked at the corresponding men's version, but the color was a shade off. Not for the first time I lamented that the Muji stores in the states didn't sell the snacks offered by their Japanese counterparts.
Soon, Jane called and we left to meet her on the corner. We walked north to the restaurant and were seated at a corner table. They gossiped about work, we chatted about this and that. Afterwards, we sat in a coffeeshop, unwilling to let the afternoon escape from us. We sat and shared each other's company; the time slipped away.
