Monument to Peter the Great, Moscow
On one of my first days in Moscow, Teresa walked me over a bridge along the first ring road. Up the river, she pointed out this monument and the Red October chocolate factory just beyond it. I had read about an exhibition at the factory, and Teresa had mentioned it was within walking distance of her house, depending on how long you wanted to walk.
Comissioned by Mayor Luzhkov and created by Tsereteli, the 165 foot monument has not been without controversy, as some residents consider it ugly, and others question the politics of Peter the Great, whose love of St. Petersburg was at least partially motivated by his dislike of Moscow.
