Inauguration Day, 4/5
As we were about to leave, three girls appeared at the opening wearing trucker hats emblazoned with messages of support for President Obama. Embroidery covered the brim, the crown, and the straps. They laughed and smiled as they passed through the room. It looked as if they had just put the hats on. They were clipping off the tags as they passed.
When I showed pictures of the hats to my cousin, she immediately said that she wanted one. She told me I would look good in a trucker hat. I demurred; she persisted.
The girls passed us on the way out. I complemented their hats. One told me that they were available at the reception, but I hadn't seen them. They ambled down the street towards the subway. I watched them as they walked ahead of us, their hats bright under the streetlights, the name of our new President flashing before me.
