Are we evil, NYC
A few weekends ago, I went to the Whitney for the Jenny Holzer show. I took the elevator; it was waiting as i walked past the ticket attendants. When the doors opened to revealed the first piece, the art took my breath away.
I spent a good deal of time with "For Chicago," reading the aphorisms and watching the light cast yellow peaks along the wall. I moved around the piece to view it at various angles. I sat on the floor; I stood by the far wall; I squatted by a corner.
None of the other pieces affected me in quite the same way, though I enjoyed some of the other LED display pieces in the gallery to the immediate left. I also enjoyed the redacted paintings, though the new LED work using texts from the Iraq war seemed to straddle awkwardly the space between the other work in the show. I found myself returning again and again to the main room, and to "For Chicago."
This photo was taken at the Guggenhiem during the anyspacewhatever show, a collection of work by ten contemporary artists. The piece shown above is by Douglas Gordon.

Great shot - it unites a seemingly airyness of capture, a random harmony in the arrangement of figures with that necessary (and, seen from outside, rarely happening) reflection about our individual but also political roles in society and in the world.
thanks markus! it's interesting to see how people exist or interact with a space, whether they be engaged in it or just simply inhabiting it without.
