Street food, NYC

Most mornings on my way to the subway I pass by a group of street vendors preparing their carts for the day. There's a garage a block or two away from my house where they store their carts for the night. As I pass they're emptying ashes from makeshift stoves, or counting out the items they have left in storage.

One of my favorite things about travel is the local street food. I love sampling things from various carts, snacking throughout the day or in late night markets. It's one of the things I miss when I come back to the states, the quality and variety of street food.

That said, I rarely actually eat street food in New York. I'm not a huge fan of hot dogs, though I had a very tasty one in Central Park one or two years ago. I do fancy the odd pretzel when I need something to tide me over to dinner, and I once had a decent empanada by Bethesda fountain (though nothing compared to the empanadas served from a plastic cooler in Buenos Aires' San Telmo area).

My favorite New York street food, however, must be the chicken rice served out of a truck in Astoria. People talk about a cart in midtown, but the one in Astoria has them beat, hands down. Speaking of which, I might have to drop by there this weekend . . .

PDX is filled with amazing street food. The city is dotted with parking lots covered in food carts. Thai, pizza, tacos, Egyptian, you name it we got it. Though my favorite cart is Pupatella, a pizza truck in Arlington, VA, just off the Ballston stop on the Metro orange line. Neapolitan goodness.

Also, if you're interested, I'm gonna try and run a bit of a pizza tour when I'm back in town in a couple weeks.
