Noodle shop, Shanghai

One of the things I miss most about China (and Asia, for that matter) are the plethora of small food shops and stalls. It seems that almostanyhere you are you can find a hole in the wall noodle shop for a quick inexpensive bite. It's not so easy in New York.

That said, Bo Ky opened a new branch on Grand Street. It's not necessarily closer to my house, but it seems so, if only because I don't have to cross canal. The food was almost identical, as were the surroundings, but they were much brighter. A friend likened it to eating in a hospital. I could see her point. Sitting in the window, I couldn't get over the view of the street and the familiar and yet different surroundings.

Speaking of restaurants in and around Chinatown, Nyonya has moved across the street and is apparently under new management. The restaurant look has been updated too, and now appears as if it wouldn't look out of place on the upper west side. I've heard mixed reviews on the food. The prices have apparently also risen with the decor. I'm not sure why they moved, but I was sad to see the old location boarded up.

Just this past weekend a friend was asking me about restaurants in New York; what's new, what's changed. She mentioned Nyonya and I said that it probably wouldn't change in my lifetime. How wrong I was.

Incidentally, I'm always looking for new places to try (in Chinatown or otherwise). If you have food recommendations let me know.

Speaking of dumpling places in chinatown, I used to go to Sweet and Tart Cafe to get my shrimp wonton soup fix until they closed and were replaced by the Egg Custard King. I miss those wontons. I think the Egg Custard King has also since been replaced, but I can't think of what's in that space now.

i love these noodle shops as well, it's the small places where you can get the most cheap and tasty foods of all!

Liang, I agree. There's one dumpling place in Shanghai I dream about. And there's a noodle street stall in Bangkok that I'm dying to get back to!
