Registan, Samarkand

I hope everyone in the states had a good Thanksgiving holiday weekend. I spent the time doing very little, and looking at this blog I'm kind of surprised how long I have gone without posting. Work has been keeping me busy as well. Between the holidays and work, it's hard to find time to keep up with the personal projects. That said, I'm also hoping to spend a good deal of time in the darkroom over the next few weeks.

I've also come back to editing my Uzbekistan photos. I'm glad I took some time away from them. I feel I have a better perspective on the images, and it's been fun to revisit the country through the photographs before me. Editing is still proving to be slow, but I'm at least much happier with the process, and hopefully will be with the eventual outcome. Perhaps I'll post the new series at the start of the new year.

In the meantime, here's a photograph of the back of the Registan, with the Ulugh Beg Madrasa on the near right, the Tilya-Kori Madrasah in the front on the left, and the Sher-Dor Madrasah on the far right.

When I first arrived in Samarkand I took the standard photo of the Registan from the front with my iPhone and sent it to some friends, remarking on the postcard shot. One was unfamiliar with where I was and looked it up on the web. She wrote back to tell me that the first image she saw on wikipedia was almost exactly the one I had taken and sent. I shrugged, virtually.

Thanks Wojszyca! Unfortunately I haven't had the time to update as much as I might like, but will try to be more diligent about it. And thanks for checking in!
